About

The Beppu Ropeway lifts 100-passenger gondolas from Beppu Kogen Station to the shoulder of Mt. Tsurumi in about 10 minutes, and from the top station short trails lead to the summit area past small shrines and Seven Lucky Gods statues. The panorama takes in the entire city, its dozens of white steam columns, Beppu Bay and the Kunisaki Peninsula, and on very clear days Shikoku across the sea. Seasons transform it: azaleas and Miyama-kirishima in late spring, autumn leaves in late October to early November, and rime ice (muhyo) on winter mornings. Special evening runs on selected autumn dates turn it into a night-view spot. The summit is much colder than town.
