Kagurame Lake Iris Garden 神楽女湖 しょうぶ園
Highland lake near Mt. Tsurumi whose garden blooms with around 15,000 irises in 80 varieties each June, with peacocks of colour against the forest. Quiet the rest of the year.
About
Kagurame Lake is a small, reedy lake in the hills behind Beppu, near Shidaka Lake and the ropeway. In June the iris garden around it erupts with about 15,000 hanashobu plants in some 80 varieties of purple, white and blue, and an iris festival with tea and local stalls is held. Outside the season it's a calm walking spot where locals come for birds and fresh air, and Suginoi Hotel even modelled its changing rooms on the scene. Combine with Shidaka Lake, 10 minutes' drive away.
