About

Tanayu ('shelf bath') is the reason people visit Suginoi Hotel without staying. Five stepped terraces of outdoor pools cascade down the slope above Beppu so the water line visually merges with the city and the sea, a classic infinity illusion that is at its best at dusk when the town lights come on and steam drifts over the rooftops. The bath was renewed with the hotel's Hana-kan wing: the corridor is designed after Beppu Park's bamboo grove, the changing rooms after Kagurame Lake's iris garden, and the 'Oto no Yu' sound bath tells the story of hot spring water circulating through the earth with light and audio. Day visitors pay one ticket that also covers the Aqua Garden swimsuit zone. Towels are lent free. It is huge, so even busy evenings feel spacious, but sunset on a weekend is peak time.
