Hachiman Asami Shrine 八幡朝見神社
Beppu's guardian shrine, approached by a grand stone stairway and a huge torii at the foot of the hills, with a spring-fed purification basin and a beloved autumn festival.
About
Hachiman Asami Jinja is the ujigami (guardian shrine) of central Beppu, with roots going back to the Kamakura period. A massive stone torii and a long stone staircase climb through tall camphor and cedar trees to a vermilion and black worship hall, and a spring by the approach is popular with locals who come to fill bottles. The autumn festival fills the approach with portable shrines. It's a 15-minute walk south-west of Beppu Station and a peaceful counterpoint to the hells.
