Beppu Bluebird Theater 別府ブルーバード劇場
Beppu's only cinema, family-run since 1949, a Showa-era single-screen house with a much-loved veteran manager.
About
Founded in 1949 by the father of long-time manager Teru Okamura, the Bluebird is Beppu's last remaining cinema. It shows a mix of new Japanese and international releases, documentaries and revivals, and has hosted stars such as Kiyoshi Atsumi of the 'Tora-san' series, which filmed in Beppu. The auditorium keeps its Showa-era character. Foreign films are normally screened in the original language with Japanese subtitles (look for 字幕 on the schedule, not 吹替 = dubbed); Japanese films are usually shown without English subtitles.
