About
The name means 'Station-Front High-Class Onsen', a joke today but a boast in 1924, when this mock-Tudor wooden building with its half-timbered facade opened as an upmarket bathhouse. It is now a cherished local institution. Two separate entrances lead to two different baths: the nuru-yu is gentle and the atsu-yu is properly scalding, and locals pick by mood. Upstairs, simple tatami rooms and a dorm-style hall are rented as some of the cheapest beds in Beppu, bathing included. It is the best first or last soak of a Beppu trip because you can drop in on the way to or from the train.
