About

Sojiji moved from the Noto Peninsula to Tsurumi in 1911 after a fire and is, with Eihei-ji in Fukui, one of the two head temples of the Soto Zen school. Its grounds are enormous: a towering Sanmon gate, the Daisodo meditation hall, and the Butsuden and Daisoden halls, the latter one of the largest wooden halls in Japan, with 1,000 tatami mats. Hundreds of trainee monks live here, and you may see them running in single file wiping the 152 m Hyakken Roka corridor with cloths. Visitors can tour the main halls with a monk guide for a small fee, and a public zazen session is held on Sundays. The grave of baseball star Ishihara Yujiro is also here.
