About

From the 1910s, people from Okinawa (and later Brazil and Peru, many of Okinawan descent) came to Tsurumi's Ushioda district to work in the Keihin industrial zone's steel and shipyards. Their descendants still give the Nakadori shopping street its flavour: shops sell bitter melon, island tofu, umi-budo sea grapes and awamori, eateries serve Okinawa soba, taco rice and goya champuru, and the Okinawa Bussan Center on the ground floor of the Tsurumi Okinawa Prefectural Association hall stocks about 1,000 Okinawan products, including noodles from the soba factory next door. Brazilian bakeries and grocers add to the mix. It is unpolished and genuinely local, best on a weekend afternoon, and festivals such as the Michijunee parade bring eisa drums to the street.
