About

Founded in 1936 (Showa 11), Marudai Hall is a living relic of Kawasaki's industrial past, when shift workers from the bayside factories needed a drink at any hour. It opens around 10:00 and runs through the day, with long tables, laminated menus covering the walls and a staff that has seen everything. The menu runs from sashimi and grilled fish to fried dishes and set meals; regulars order the anago ippon-age, an entire conger eel fried crisp and fluffy, with homemade hakusai pickles and a cold beer or chuhai. Daytime drinking here is perfectly normal and wonderfully unpretentious, and it is two minutes from the Keikyu Kawasaki station gates.
