About

The JR viaduct between Yurakucho and Shimbashi was built on red-brick arches in the 1910s, and the spaces underneath have been filled with tiny bars and yakitori counters ever since. On the stretch just south of Yurakucho Station, tables spill onto the pavement under the girders, office workers sit on upturned crates, and trains rumble overhead every few minutes. It is pure street photography: smoke catching the lantern light, steel and brick textures, and Tokyo's after-work ritual in motion. The scene is best on a weekday evening after 18:30, and it changes as redevelopment slowly reshapes the area, so photograph it while it lasts.
