About

Yokoyama Taikan (1868–1958) lived and worked in this sukiya-style house beside Shinobazu Pond from 1909 until his death; the present house was rebuilt in 1954 after it was destroyed in wartime bombing. The museum keeps it as he left it, with his paintings, sketches and personal items displayed in the tatami rooms where he received guests, and a garden he designed around a pond and old trees. Exhibitions change seasonally to match the paintings to the time of year; autumn 2026 shows Taikan's flowers, birds, wind and moon (to Oct 18). It is a small, intimate place, open only four days a week, and a lovely contrast to the big museums of Ueno Park across the pond.
