About

Shitamachi, the 'low city' of artisans and merchants around Ueno and Asakusa, was largely erased by the 1923 earthquake and wartime bombing, and this small museum preserves its memory. On the ground floor, you take off your shoes and step into life-size reconstructions of a Taisho-era merchant's shop selling hanao sandal straps, a coppersmith's home and a nagaya row-house tenement, complete with a tiny shared alley, a sweet shop and dagashi toys. Upstairs, everyday objects, photographs and donated household goods illustrate daily life from the Meiji period to the Showa 30s. After a two-year renovation it reopened in 2025 with refreshed displays. It takes under an hour and is one of Ueno's most charming and inexpensive stops.
