Ueno Seiyoken 上野精養軒
Pioneer of Western cuisine in Japan, founded in 1872; its Ueno Park restaurant opened in 1876.
About
Seiyoken was founded in April 1872 in Tsukiji, with the backing of leading Meiji statesmen, as one of the first restaurants in Japan to serve Western food. When Ueno Park opened, the founder was encouraged to open a branch there, and in 1876 Ueno Seiyoken began serving diners on the hill overlooking Shinobazu Pond. After the original Tsukiji restaurant burned in the 1923 earthquake, the Ueno branch became the head restaurant. For generations of Tokyoites a meal here, after the zoo or a museum, was a treat. Its hayashi rice and beef stew are classic yoshoku.
