About

Built in 1896 for Iwasaki Hisaya, the third president of Mitsubishi, the mansion was designed by Josiah Conder, the British architect who trained Japan's first generation of Western-style architects. It is one of the finest surviving Western-style residences of the Meiji era and an Important Cultural Property. The wooden two-storey main house blends Jacobean English design with Pennsylvania-colonial verandas and Islamic-patterned tiles, with gilded leather wallpaper (kinkarakawa-shi), elaborate fireplaces and a carved staircase. A separate billiard room, styled as a Swiss chalet, was connected to the main house by an underground passage. Only part of the original Japanese wing survives, but you can sit on its tatami facing the lawn, sometimes with matcha. Visitors take off their shoes and walk through the main rooms; the garden and lawn are a calm escape a few minutes from Ueno's crowds.
