About

Yakatabune are flat-bottomed, lantern-hung houseboats that have carried Edo merrymakers since the 17th century. Most cruises are private charters for 20 or more, but Funasei, operating from a canal in Kita-Shinagawa's old post-town district, runs 'noriai' shared boats that accept bookings from just two people, seated in semi-private sections. The roughly two-and-a-half-hour evening cruise heads out into the bay toward Odaiba and Rainbow Bridge, often idling with views of Tokyo Tower and Skytree; you can step onto the roof deck between courses. Inside, low tables on tatami are laid with sashimi and a stream of tempura fried on board, with drinks included. Funasei was named among the trade press's top 30 tourist boats in Japan. Expect a convivial, slightly boisterous atmosphere, a great night out with Japanese locals.
