Kyu-Tokaido Shinagawa-shuku 旧東海道 品川宿
The first post town on the old Tokaido highway from Edo to Kyoto: a narrow, winding shopping street of old merchant houses, shrines and tiny cafes running parallel to Keikyu's tracks.
About
In the Edo period every traveller heading west from Nihonbashi stayed their first night here, and the original Tokaido road still meanders through Kita-Shinagawa and Minami-Shinagawa. Today it is a local shopping street with a slow, retro feel: old tatami and sake shops, wooden machiya, Edo-themed street signs, the Shinagawa-juku Kotsu-sho information house and small temples. Side lanes lead down to the Meguro River mouth, where yakatabune pleasure boats moor. It is a short walk from Shinagawa station and yet worlds away from its towers.
