About

For generations, migrants and students from Tohoku arrived in Tokyo at Ueno, and the station still carries that nostalgia. The current main building dates from 1932, with its great hall and high-windowed concourse facing Asakusa-dori. Look for the memorial plate to poet Ishikawa Takuboku's tanka about listening for his home dialect in the station crowds. The low-level terminus platforms on the east side, once the starting point for night trains like the Hokutosei and Cassiopeia, still feel like another era. Upstairs, the Park Exit puts you a few steps from the Tokyo National Museum, National Museum of Western Art and Ueno Zoo, and the Iriya Exit leads to the Panda Bridge (Panda-bashi), a walkway across the tracks decorated with panda motifs. Inside the gates, ecute Ueno is packed with panda-shaped sweets and bento. The deep Shinkansen platforms, about 30 m underground, add a fun descent when you are heading north.
