About

Run by the Japan Art Association, the Ueno Royal Museum has no permanent displays; it is a rental and organising venue that has hosted some of Tokyo's most attended shows, from Van Gogh to Vermeer, along with its own annual Ueno Royal Museum Grand Prize exhibition of contemporary painting and the VOCA show of young artists. Its location, the first building you pass coming up the steps from Ueno Station's Park Exit, makes it an easy add-on to a museum day. For autumn and winter 2026 it hosts European Masterpieces from the Cincinnati Art Museum, with 84 works by Corot, Cezanne, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh and Picasso, 81 of them shown in Japan for the first time. The exhibition opens daily, including New Year's Day.
