About

Tokyo Cruise Ship Co. has run sightseeing boats on the Sumida River since the 1950s and its pier beside Azumabashi bridge is the most scenic way to leave Asakusa. Regular boats run downriver under a parade of distinctive bridges, each painted a different colour, past Tsukishima's towers to Hinode Pier (about 40 minutes), with some services stopping at Hama-rikyu Gardens (entry to the garden is extra) and continuing to Odaiba. The fleet's stars are Himiko and Hotaluna, silver spaceship-like boats designed by manga artist Leiji Matsumoto (Galaxy Express 999), which run a limited number of Asakusa–Odaiba services at a higher fare and sell out quickly. It's transport and sightseeing in one: go one way by boat and return by Yurikamome or train. Timetables thin out in the evening and some boats have maintenance days.
