About

Tobu Railway's Asakusa terminal opened in 1931 inside the Matsuya department store building, and its restored Art Deco facade (renovated in 2012 as EKIMISE) is one of the last great pre-war terminals in Tokyo. The station is unusually tight: platforms bend sharply as the tracks leave the building and immediately cross the Sumida River, so trains creep out at walking pace. Since 2020, the Sumida River Walk, a pedestrian path hung on the side of the railway bridge, lets you cross alongside the trains, with glass floor panels over the river and Tokyo Skytree straight ahead. It leads to Tokyo Mizumachi, a row of cafes and shops under the elevated tracks. This is also where the Spacia X luxury express (launched in 2023) and the Revaty set off for Nikko and Kinugawa Onsen.
