Tokiwabashi Stone Bridge 常磐橋
A twin-arch stone bridge from 1877 over the Nihonbashi River, built from the stones of an Edo Castle gate and reopened in 2021 after restoration.
About
Tokiwa-bashi stood at the Joban Gate, one of the main entrances to Edo Castle, on the road to the Oshu highway. In 1877 the wooden bridge was replaced with a two-arch stone bridge using stones from the dismantled gate, making it one of the oldest Western-style stone arch bridges in Tokyo. Damaged in the 2011 earthquake, it was carefully dismantled, repaired and reopened in 2021 as a pedestrian bridge. Part of the castle gate's stone walls remains in Tokiwabashi Park, a national historic site, and the Torch Tower skyscraper project now rises behind it. A road bridge with the same reading (written 常盤橋) stands 70 m downstream.
