Nihonbashi Sembikiya Sohonten 日本橋千疋屋総本店
Japan's oldest fruit shop, founded in 1834, where perfect crown melons cost ¥10,000-plus and strawberries are sold like jewellery, and a fruit parlour serves spectacular parfaits.
About
Sembikiya began as a fruit stall in 1834 and became the symbol of Japan's luxury-fruit gift culture. Its main store in Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower displays flawless muskmelons in wooden boxes, giant strawberries, Shine Muscat grapes and seasonal peaches lined up like a jeweller's window, with gift melons commonly well over ¥10,000. The adjoining Fruits Parlor serves fruit sandwiches, parfaits and melon desserts, a cheaper way to taste the fruit; its signature parfaits are a fixture on Instagram.
