About

The Mitsui family, founders of the Echigoya kimono shop that became Mitsukoshi, gathered one of Japan's great collections of tea utensils, paintings, calligraphy and Noh masks over three centuries. Since 2005 it has been shown on the 7th floor of the Mitsui Main Building, a neoclassical Important Cultural Property, in galleries panelled in dark wood with the original elevators and vault doors. Its most famous works are Maruyama Okyo's National Treasure Snow-Covered Pines screens, shown each winter around New Year, and the National Treasure Shino tea bowl named Unohanagaki. In autumn 2026, 100 Selected Tea Bowls (Sep 12 to Nov 23) runs from national treasures to handmade bowls, followed by Snow Pines and the Four Seasons (Dec 12, 2026 to Jan 30, 2027).
