About

Mandarin Oriental Tokyo opened in 2005 on the 30th to 38th floors of Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower, designed by Cesar Pelli. The tower stands directly beside the 1929 Mitsui Main Building, a classical banking hall designated an Important Cultural Property. The contrast between old and new Nihonbashi is part of the appeal. The hotel's theme is a forest and water, with textiles, woodwork and art drawing on Japanese crafts. The Oriental Lounge in the 38th-floor lobby has double-height windows, a fireplace and some of the best sky views in eastern Tokyo, across to the Tokyo Skytree and, on clear days, Mount Fuji. It is a classic spot for afternoon tea. One floor down, the Mandarin Bar, designed by Tokyo's Ryu Kosaka, has a moody, sexy room with a Zen-like pool and bold designer furniture. The tower stands over Mitsukoshi department store and the Nihonbashi heritage district, a short walk from the famous Nihonbashi bridge.
