About

Mitsukoshi traces its roots to Echigoya, a kimono shop opened in 1673, and in 1904 declared itself Japan's first department store. Its Nihonbashi main building (1935) is a designated Important Cultural Property: lions modelled on Trafalgar Square's guard the entrance, and the central atrium is dominated by the 11-metre carved Magokoro (Tennyo) statue and a theatre organ. Floors cover kimono, crafts and luxury brands, while the basement food hall offers some of Tokyo's finest wagashi and bento. The rooftop garden and shrine are a quiet surprise.
