Togo Shrine 東郷神社
A calm green pocket just off Takeshita-dori, dedicated to Admiral Togo Heihachiro, with a koi pond, a well-loved weekend antique market and a reputation for victory luck.
About
Togo Shrine enshrines Admiral Togo Heihachiro, whose fleet defeated the Russian navy at Tsushima in 1905, and so is visited for 'victory', exams, sports and job interviews. For travellers it's a welcome breather from Harajuku's crush: a pond garden with koi and turtles, wisteria and seasonal flowers, a wedding hall, and a modest worship hall rebuilt after the war. On several Sundays a month (typically the 1st, 4th and 5th) the Togo Shrine antique market fills the forecourt with kimono, ceramics, old toys and curios from early morning, one of Tokyo's better flea markets for vintage hunters.
Highlights
- Koi and turtle pond with stone lanterns, a minute from Takeshita-dori
- Sunday antique market with kimono, Showa toys and ceramics
- Shobu-ike-style garden with wisteria in spring
- 'Victory' omamori popular with students before exams
Tips
- The antique market starts around 4:00–7:00 and winds down by mid-afternoon; check the dates and go early for the best finds.
- Enter from the side lane off Takeshita-dori (Takeshita-guchi), many people walk right past the gate.
- Cancelled in heavy rain, markets don't run in bad weather.
