Grave of the Shōgitai (Ueno Park) 彰義隊の墓
Monument in Ueno Park to the shogunate loyalists who fell in the 1868 Battle of Ueno.
About
In 1868, as the new Meiji government took over Edo, a band of shogunate loyalists called the Shōgitai refused to disband and gathered on the hill of Ueno around Kan'ei-ji. On 15 May by the old calendar, government troops attacked, and the Shōgitai were crushed in a single day. More than two hundred bodies were left on the battlefield; the authorities at first forbade their burial, until a monk and a merchant who served Kan'ei-ji received permission to cremate them. A memorial was allowed only years later; the present stone, inscribed 'Grave of those who died in battle' in the calligraphy of former shogunate retainer Yamaoka Tesshū, was set up in 1881 just behind the statue of Saigō Takamori, whose side won the battle.
