SunnyHills Minami-Aoyama (Kengo Kuma Lattice) サニーヒルズ南青山
Kengo Kuma's pineapple-cake shop wrapped in a three-dimensional timber lattice, an architecture favourite on the quiet backstreets of Minami-Aoyama.
About
Stand across the narrow street from SunnyHills and shoot the whole facade, a dense web of interlocking timber beams in the traditional jigoku-gumi joinery style that makes the building look like a wooden cloud. Late afternoon side light brings out the depth of the lattice, and a close-up from the corner abstracts it into pure pattern. Inside, the shop serves visitors a free pineapple cake and tea, so a short visit is easy to justify. It is a residential street: keep off private steps, do not block the entrance, and no tripods.
Highlights
- Three-dimensional timber lattice by Kengo Kuma
- Strong graphic patterns for close-ups
- Quiet residential backstreet setting
- Complimentary tea and pineapple cake inside
Tips
- Use a wide lens from across the street, as the lane is narrow.
- Combine with Prada Aoyama and the Nezu Museum nearby for an architecture walk.
- Check opening hours before going if you want to go inside.
