About

When it opened in 2003, Herzog & de Meuron's Prada Epicenter changed what a fashion store could be. The building is a five-sided crystal whose structure is a diagonal steel grid filled with rhombus-shaped panes of glass, some flat, some convex and some concave, so the street and passers-by appear distorted as you walk around it. Inside, tubular horizontal 'snorkels' brace the structure and act as fitting rooms and display cases. It sits on a small plaza on Miyuki-dori, one of the best streets in Tokyo for contemporary architecture, close to Kengo Kuma's Nezu Museum and the flagships of Comme des Garcons, Miu Miu and others. Day or night it is worth the detour: lit from inside after dark, it glows like a lantern.
