About

Hokusai, creator of The Great Wave, was born and spent most of his life in Sumida, and this museum, opened in 2016, sits in a small park a few blocks from his birthplace. Kazuyo Sejima (SANAA) designed the building as a cluster of mirrored aluminium volumes split by deep slits, a striking contrast to the low-rise streets. The permanent AURORA gallery presents high-quality reproductions of Hokusai's key works, including the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, with touch-screen tables to zoom into details of Hokusai Manga sketches, and a life-size model of the 80-something Hokusai painting in his cluttered room while his daughter Oei looks on. Special exhibitions show original prints from the collection. The 10th-anniversary show 'See THE SUMIDA HOKUSAI MUSEUM's Best' runs until November 23, 2026.
