About

Locals call it "Nishiogi", and Tokyoites who find Kichijoji and Koenji too busy come here instead. The area has long been known for its antique dealers, who group together on maps the shopping association hands out. You'll find Meiji-era glass and ceramics, old Japanese tansu chests and mid-century Danish furniture, along with old books, records and handmade crafts. The shops are spread over a few blocks north and south of the station, along Nishiogi's hand-drawn narrow streets. Between them are small coffee roasters, Indian curry houses and bakeries. By the south exit is Yanagi-koji, a narrow alley of tiny bars and yakitori stalls, an old-style nomiya strip that locals use for a quiet drink. It is a fun neighbourhood for slow browsing, especially if you're into old craft and design.
