About

Golden Gai is a grid of two-storey wooden shacks between Kabukicho and Hanazono Shrine that survived Tokyo's bubble-era land grabs. Each bar is the owner's living room, themed around whatever they love, and historically the haunt of writers, filmmakers and photographers. Today many bars actively welcome visitors with English signs, while others are members-only or 'regulars only' (look for signs on the door). Most charge a table/cover fee of ¥500–1,500 on top of drinks, which are typically ¥700–1,200. The fun is to move on after one drink and try another staircase. It gets busy from 21:00 and runs until the first train.
