About

Set in the leafy Shinagawa Kumin Park on the old shoreline, Shinagawa Aquarium opened in 1991 and is a cheaper, calmer alternative to the big commercial aquariums. The first floor follows water from Tokyo's rivers to the open sea, with a 22 m tunnel tank where rays and sea turtles glide overhead; downstairs are seals, penguins, sharks and jellyfish, and a stadium hosts dolphin and sea lion performances. A special Eric Carle exhibition runs until 25 December 2026 for the 35th anniversary. Shinagawa Ward plans to rebuild the facility, with the new building targeted for fiscal 2027 and no dolphins, so this is the last chance to see the classic version.
