About

Shibuya sits in a valley, which is why its lines tumble in at absurd levels: the Ginza Line runs three floors above the street, while the Tokyu Toyoko and Fukutoshin lines lie five floors below it. Since 2012 the station area has been rebuilt around them, with Shibuya Hikarie, Shibuya Stream, Shibuya Scramble Square and Shibuya Sakura Stage each adding decks and skyways. The Ginza Line platform, moved in 2020, is now a striking white M-shaped steel arch hung above Meiji-dori, and the JR Saikyo Line platform was slid alongside the Yamanote Line the same year. Work is due to continue into the 2030s, so routes change and temporary walkways appear, but that is part of the fun: you can watch a city rebuild itself while millions of passengers a day keep passing through. The Hachiko Exit drops you at the statue and Scramble Crossing, both listed separately.
