About

Hachiko met Professor Hidesaburo Ueno at Shibuya Station every evening until the professor died suddenly in 1925; the dog kept returning to wait each day until his own death in 1935. The first statue was erected in 1934 while Hachiko was still alive, melted down for the war effort, and recast by the original sculptor's son in 1948. It stands in the plaza by the Hachiko Exit and is the default 'meet you at Hachiko' spot for all Tokyo. Look out for the decorative Hachiko mosaic on the station walls, and at the University of Tokyo there's a moving statue of Hachiko leaping up to greet the professor. His stuffed remains are at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno.
