About

Makino Tomitaro named well over a thousand Japanese plants and was the inspiration for the 2023 NHK morning drama Ranman. He lived and worked here from 1926 until his death in 1957. Nerima Ward has kept his garden as he planted it, a shady, slightly wild collection of over 300 species, including the Sueko-zasa bamboo named after his wife and the rare Sendai-ya cherry. A small memorial hall shows his botanical illustrations, which are astonishingly detailed, along with tools and herbarium sheets. Part of his study is preserved behind glass, still piled high with books. It is free, quiet and very personal, a favourite for local gardeners and nature lovers.
