About

Legend says two fishermen netted a small golden statue of Kannon from the Sumida River in 628, and Senso-ji has been the spiritual heart of Asakusa ever since. The approach is pure theatre: the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) with its 700 kg red chochin lantern, then 250 m of Nakamise-dori stalls selling ningyo-yaki cakes, age-manju and kitschy souvenirs, then the Hozomon gate hung with giant straw sandals, and finally the main hall, rebuilt in 1958 after wartime bombing. A five-storey pagoda rises to the left, and the Shinto Asakusa Shrine sits just behind the hall. The grounds never close, and the place transforms after dark when the gates and pagoda are lit and the crowds vanish. Sanja Matsuri in mid-May is one of Tokyo's wildest festivals, and the Hagoita-ichi battledore fair runs in mid-December.
