Suzukien Asakusa 壽々喜園 浅草本店
The tea merchant whose 'world's strongest matcha gelato' went viral: seven intensity levels of matcha gelato, from gentle No. 1 to a near-black, bittersweet No. 7.
Double cup: ¥700
About
Suzukien is a long-established Asakusa tea shop that teamed up with Shizuoka tea maker Nanaya to sell matcha gelato in seven strengths. Level 7 uses so much premium matcha that it's almost forest-black and tastes intensely grassy and bitter in the best way. Other flavours include hojicha (roasted tea), genmaicha and black sesame, and you can pair two flavours in a double cup. The shop also sells loose-leaf teas and matcha, making it a useful souvenir stop a few minutes' walk north-east of Senso-ji.
Highlights
- Seven levels of matcha gelato, culminating in the ultra-strong No. 7
- Hojicha, genmaicha and black-sesame gelato for contrast
- Double cups to compare two flavours side by side
- Loose-leaf teas and matcha for souvenirs
- Quiet street a few minutes from Senso-ji
Tips
- Pair Level 7 with Level 1 or hojicha in a double for contrast
- Level 7 costs a little more than the others
- There can be a short queue in the afternoon; mornings are quicker
- Eat in front of the shop rather than walking through the temple grounds
