Nakamise-dori 仲見世通り
Japan's oldest shopping street, a 250m lane of 89 stalls linking Kaminarimon Gate to Senso-ji, fresh ningyo-yaki cakes, agemanju, senbei crackers, fans and folk crafts.
About
Nakamise has served pilgrims to Senso-ji since the early 18th century. Today its red-roofed stalls sell freshly made ningyo-yaki (sponge cakes shaped like pagodas and lanterns), Asakusa Kokonoe's fried agemanju, crunchy senbei grilled to order, kibi-dango and bright Japanese souvenirs from folding fans to kimono accessories. The street is packed from mid-morning; early morning and after the shops close (~19:00) are magical, with the shutters painted with Edo-era scenes and the temple lit up.
Highlights
- Freshly baked ningyo-yaki sponge cakes
- Agemanju fried buns at Asakusa Kokonoe
