Asakusa Kagetsudo (Main Store) 浅草 花月堂 本店
Home of Asakusa's famous 'jumbo melonpan', a giant, crackly-topped sweet bun baked all day and eaten warm on the street a minute from Senso-ji. A fixture of every Asakusa food-crawl video.
About
Kagetsudo's main store sits just off Senso-ji's grounds, and the smell of baking melonpan drifts across the lane all day. The jumbo melonpan is about the size of a side plate, with a crisp, sugary cookie crust and a soft, fluffy interior; it's baked in small batches and sold warm, often with a short queue at the window. There's a small seating area inside, and in summer the shop is known for melonpan ice-cream sandwiches and shaved ice. It's a cheap, cheerful snack to eat before or after visiting the temple, and the classic Asakusa photo prop.
