About

Run by Maikoya, the company behind popular tea-ceremony studios in Kyoto and Tokyo, this is less a museum than a guided show-and-tell with props. The Basic Ticket starts with a roughly one-hour guided tour of replica and antique armour, helmets and blades, delivered in English with plenty of humour and history (bushido, the end of the samurai class, how ninja actually worked). Then come the activities: trying on samurai armour, learning how a sword is drawn and held, ninja stealth basics and a shuriken-throwing competition, with occasional live sword performances. Higher-priced tickets add full metal armour and longer training lessons. It is touristy, but well paced and genuinely fun for families and anyone who grew up on samurai films. A second branch has opened in Shinjuku; the Asakusa one sits between Tawaramachi and the Tsukuba Express station, steps from Kappabashi kitchenware street.
