About

Noh is the oldest continuously performed theatre form in the world: slow, ritual, haunting, with carved masks, magnificent silk costumes, a chorus and a small ensemble of flute and drums on a bare cypress stage under its own roof. Kyogen, performed between noh plays, is its comic counterpart, broad and often very funny. The National Noh Theatre in Sendagaya stages regular performances (teirei), introductory 'fukyu' programmes with an explanatory talk, and special series, typically a kyogen plus a noh in two to three hours. Every seat has a small screen offering English or Japanese subtitles, which makes the plots far easier to follow. Tickets are reasonably priced and go on sale about a month ahead; the theatre also has a small exhibition room on noh masks and costumes. Choose a fukyu (introductory) performance for a first visit.
