About

Opened in late 2019 on the site of the 1964 Olympic stadium, the new National Stadium was designed by Kengo Kuma with Taisei Corporation after Zaha Hadid's earlier scheme was scrapped. Its defining feature is the stacked eaves of the outer walkways, faced with larch and cedar louvres using timber from every prefecture in Japan, with plants spilling over the edges so the stadium almost reads as a forested hill from the outer garden. The roof also uses laminated timber and steel to shade the 68,000 seats. It hosted the Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies and athletics, and now stages football, rugby and stadium concerts; since 2026 it also carries a sponsor name, MUFG Stadium. On non-event days, self-guided and premium tours let you walk out to the track, see the athletes' locker rooms and the warm-up area, and visit the Olympic memorabilia, while the free fifth-floor sky walkway circles the top.
