About

Once the estate of a feudal lord and later an imperial garden, Shinjuku Gyoen opened to the public in 1949. Its three distinct zones flow together: an English landscape garden with sweeping lawns framed by the NTT Docomo Tower, a French formal garden with plane-tree avenues and rose beds, and a Japanese garden of ponds, islands and the Kyu-Goryotei (Taiwan Pavilion). About 900 cherry trees of 60 varieties give one of Tokyo's longest blossom seasons, from early-blooming kanzakura to late double yaezakura. The modern greenhouse shelters tropical orchids and rare plants, and autumn brings chrysanthemum displays and fiery maples. Unlike many parks, alcohol and sports gear are banned, keeping it calm.
