About

Manpuku started as a street stall in the Taisho era and opened in its present spot near Kabukiza in 1929, making it one of the oldest continuously operating ramen shops in Tokyo. Now run by the founder's grandson, it keeps a retro interior of tiled counters and wooden fittings that look straight out of a Showa film set. The chuka soba, once sold as 'shina soba' from the yatai, is a light, clear shoyu broth with thin noodles, chashu, menma, naruto and a distinctive strip of thin-fried egg. The menu also covers machi-chuka standards such as fried rice and gyoza. In the middle of luxury Ginza, a bowl here costs less than a coffee in the department stores around it.
