About

Kiyosu-bashi was built in 1928 as part of the post-earthquake reconstruction of Tokyo and is said to have been modelled on a suspension bridge over the Rhine in Cologne. Its graceful chain curves are considered among the most beautiful of all Sumida bridges, and it was designated a national Important Cultural Property in 2007 together with Eitai-bashi and Kachidoki-bashi. The favourite vantage is the Sumida River Terrace on the Nihonbashi-Nakasu bank just south of the bridge, where you can frame the full sweep of the chains with Skytree in the distance to the north-east. At night soft lighting picks out the curves, and the reflections on the river make long exposures irresistible.
