About

The Sumida River Terrace is a low-level promenade built along the rivers flood walls, now largely continuous on both banks for many kilometres. The stretch from Kiyosu Bridge upstream past Shin-Ohashi, Ryogoku Bridge and Kuramae Bridge is the most rewarding: you walk right at water level under some of Tokyos finest 1920s earthquake-reconstruction bridges, each lit in a different colour at night. Murals and panels along the walls tell the history of the river, joggers and cyclists share the path, and the Skytree appears between buildings as you head north. The terrace connects with Kiyosumi Gardens, Ryogoku (sumo and the Hokusai Museum) and Kuramaes craft shops, so it doubles as a scenic way to link east Tokyo sights on foot.
