Sumidagawa Ohashi Bridge 隅田川大橋
The Sumida's only double-decker bridge, with an expressway on top and a road and footpath underneath, offering a high, open view down toward Eitai Bridge and the bay.
About
Completed in 1979 together with the Metropolitan Expressway Fukagawa Route above it, Sumidagawa Ohashi is not a beauty on its own, but it is a superb viewing platform. Because it sits higher than the older bridges, the footpath looks straight down the river at the lit-up blue arch of Eitai Bridge, Chuo Ohashi and the Tsukishima towers, and upstream to the curves of Kiyosu Bridge. It is a favourite with night photographers for this "two bridges in one frame" shot.
Highlights
- Only two-level bridge on the Sumida
- Elevated view of Eitai Bridge and Kiyosu Bridge in one walk
- Night view toward the Tsukishima and Okawabata towers
- Close to the Nihonbashi River mouth and Toyomi Bridge
Tips
- Bring a tripod for long exposures of Eitai Bridge from the downstream footpath.
- Traffic noise from the expressway above is constant: this is a stop, not a place to linger.
- Continue to Toyomi Bridge (2 min) for another lit-up classic.
