Shin-Ohashi Bridge 新大橋
A 1977 cable-stayed bridge on the site of Edo's third Sumida bridge, the one Hiroshige painted in his famous "Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi".
About
The first Shin-Ohashi ("new great bridge") opened in 1693, reportedly at the urging of the shogun Tsunayoshi's mother, and Matsuo Basho, who lived nearby in Fukagawa, wrote haiku about it under construction. Hiroshige's print of figures caught in rain on the bridge, later copied by Van Gogh, made it world famous. The 1912 steel truss replacement was moved in part to the Meiji Mura museum in Aichi, and the current two-span cable-stayed bridge with its single tower opened in 1977. The Basho Memorial Museum and Basho-an site are a short walk downstream on the Koto side.
