About
Gion opened in 1980 and has hardly changed since. Inside it is dim and slightly baroque, packed with plants, chandeliers and figurines, and the famous seats are swings hanging on chains from the ceiling, so you sway gently as you sip. The menu is classic kissaten. It includes ketchup-rich Napolitan spaghetti (the café's signature), toast sets, curry, siphon coffee and vivid melon cream sodas with a scoop of ice cream. It is open from morning to late night. Locals use it as a breakfast spot, a writing desk and a late-evening hideout, and on weekends Showa-retro fans come to photograph the swings.
